Home-Start is a charity who support families with at least one child under 5 who are struggling to cope. We train local people with parenting or child care experience to become Home-Start volunteers offering emotional support and practical help to families through home visiting for 2/3 hours a week.
Typically the families we support have issues around:
low self esteem
confidence in parenting
new to the area
health issues or disabilities
struggling to cope with a new baby, multiple births or multiple children under 5
barriers accessing support services and attending appointments
being ready for school
Our service aims to work at a preventative and early stage of intervention at level 2, although some families at level 3 can be supported where a role for a volunteer can be identified as part of a multi-agency team approach. Home-Start is not a substitute for professional services but complementary to them and the best results are achieved through an active partnership between professionals and Home-Start.
Prior to referral please ensure the Home-Start service is discussed with the family and whether weekly volunteer support is the right service for them - it is important a referral is only made with their consent. In order to work effectively it is essential that the referral form is completed in full following the guidance provided and any supporting information in relation to Early Help, Case Planning or Child Protection is provided. If you are unsure or wish to discuss your referral please contact the relevant office as listed in the Contact Us page.
We also welcome referrals of parents or people with child care experience who wish to become Home-Start volunteers. Please visit the volunteer page for further information about the application process.
Manchester is one of the only areas in the country served by 1 local authority but with 2 separate Home-Start schemes. Both schemes' Trustees and Scheme Managers have been meeting for some time to evaluate the pros and cons of becoming 1 Manchester organisation. They have concluded that a merger of both schemes will create a stronger; more efficient and effective service for families, volunteers and for you our valued referrers.
We value our referral partners and the collaborative process of working with families to ensure the children of Manchester have the best possible start in life. It is therefore very important to take into careful consideration how the merger may affect you. With this in mind we are committed to creating one Manchester service that is as easy as possible to access; providing referrers with a clear understanding of Home-Start's support remit and our mutual expectations.
We already have some of the processes in place and will be developing them further ahead of a formal merger date of 2nd January 2018:
•One website at www.homestartinmanchester.org.uk
•one referral form and one referral point. Referrals can be submitted to firstname.lastname@example.org
•referral triage completed by one citywide team
•one waiting list system
•Citywide coordinated volunteer training and support
You will get a chance to meet staff from either scheme as we start to co-deliver training or attend events and there will also be a change to management as we create one team across the City.
The service will continue to operate from its 2 office spaces in Wythenshawe and Cheetham for the foreseeable future and we will update you if this changes.
We are hoping you won’t notice any difference to the service, but if you have any questions or experience any difficulties please contact us at the office on 0161 945 6832 or e-mail us to email@example.com
